1. Mastering Footwork

Footwork might not be the most thrilling aspect of netball, but it's crucial for a smooth and effective performance during a match. Having quick, light feet can prevent you from committing footwork errors, which we all dread. You can enhance your footwork at home or before a match by using an agility ladder. Place the ladder on the ground and practice quick steps in and out of the rungs. This drill will improve your reaction time and help you stay on the balls of your feet, making you more agile on the court.

If you don't have an agility ladder, no worries! Use chalk to draw a ladder on the pavement or driveway. This DIY method works just as well. Also, to avoid lifting the wrong foot after catching the ball, try landing on both feet simultaneously. This gives you better balance and allows you to choose which foot to pivot on, giving you more freedom to move.


2. Diversify Your Passing Techniques

Relying solely on overhead passes might seem convenient, but it's often intercepted by the opposition, especially if they are positioned behind your intended receiver. Instead, try incorporating chest passes and bounce passes into your game.

  • Chest Passes: Though it might take a bit longer to advance the ball down the court, chest passes are more reliable when you’re positioned ball-side. This means you’re between the ball and your opponent, making it harder for them to intercept. Ensure your chest passes are quick and consistent. They work best when your team is moving diagonally and explosively down the court, creating space and opportunities.

  • Bounce Passes: These are particularly effective in the goal circle. By using bounce passes to reach your Goal Attack (GA) or Goal Shooter (GS), you make it harder for tall defenders to intercept. They have to bend down to reach the ball, giving your player a better chance to catch it. As with chest passes, positioning yourself ball-side makes it more difficult for the defenders to intervene.


3. Utilize the Entire Court

A common mistake in netball is having the whole team crowding into the same area, making it difficult to pass the ball and break free from defenders. Remember, the entire court is at your disposal, so use it wisely!

For example, during a sideline pass, instead of positioning yourself close to the sideline, stand as far from the ball as possible. When your teammate is about to throw, run towards the ball. This movement helps you break free from your marker and keeps you active. The only time you should be standing still is when you have possession of the ball.
